The Brewster Transportation Company promoted a program that visual artists could apply for as Artists in Residence, where they were generously fed and housed, and free to spend their days outdoors, painting and sketching.
Trips in the area included many exciting locations, including the Columbia Icefield, where they were invited to ride a giant vehicle midway up the Athabasca Glacier, and finally dropped off to carefully and rather fearfully traverse the glacier’s icy terrain, with the expertise of a guide. It was an exhilarating experience, having to jump over some of the deceptively beautiful but dangerous aqua-coloured crevasses. The guide ensured that his group of novice mountaineers fully understood that this was a life-threatening venture, and conveyed that fact in no uncertain terms with several gruesome tales that he avowed to be true.
